Obituary:
Dorthy Lynn Mayfield Vogel died lovingly at home in Ukiah, CA on Monday, April 19th, at the age of 77, from small cell lung cancer. She is preceded in death by her parents (John and Opal Mayfield), in-laws (Alan and Vicki Vogel) and sisters Joan Gaustad, Linda Grantland, and brother-in-law Harry Ford. Dorthy was born in Nowata, Oklahoma, the 6th of seven children. She is survived by her daughters Kelly Huffman (Rodney), Tracy Thieriot (Ferdinand), step daughter Lisa Stiles (Gary) and grandchildren, Kyle Tellstrom, Lucas Tellstrom, Kera Tellstrom, Tucker Huffman, Colby Huffman, Ferdinand Thieriot IV, Victorine Thieriot, Carson Thieriot, Sigrun Case Stiles, Madeline Stiles, and siblings Leah Ford, John Mayfield (Sandy), Marcia Root (Ron), and Joe Mayfield (Diane) as well as many, many nieces, nephews, cousins and closely held family friends.
In 1946 the Mayfield family moved to Mendocino County and lived out Orr Springs Road where they founded Mendo Mill and Lumber Company. Her younger years at the Mill were special and filled with adventure. At its height over 50 families lived at the Mill and Dorthy attended a one room elementary school house until they moved into town.
Dorthy enjoyed athletics, social dancing, solving puzzles and was an avid reader. She graduated Ukiah High School in 1961 and worked at Myers Apothecary before moving to Santa Rosa to attend Junior College and become a dental assistant. She returned to Ukiah where she married Alan Gregg Vogel. Together they founded Vogelís Used Cars (today Vogelís RVís) where she worked while raising her daughters. After divorcing, she enjoyed traveling with her family and supporting her grandchildrenís interests - particularly racing, athletics and performance. She regularly gathered with friends for dinners and classmates from the class of 1961. The last years of her life were particularly memorable (and never dull) while living with two of her grandchildren and sharing close family time through the trials of Covid and cancer. She met the challenge with amazing fortitude, grace and awareness and carefully planned for the end of her life.
A ceremony and celebration will be held on Saturday May 15th, 2021 at the family home in Ukiah, CA.
