Obituary:
Harriet Jean Piper, Mendocino County ranching matriarch, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2011 at her home on the Piper Ranch. Born in Healdsburg, CA. on November 12th, 1916 to the late Arthur and Ester Crispin of Philo. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob Piper, son Matt Piper, grandson Matthew Piper and siblings Bill Crispin, Norma Walker and Kay Franci. Jean is survived by her sister Linda Hulbert of Philo, her three children Carole Canevari, Kathleen Titus and Bill Piper, their spouses Marshall Canevari, Wallace Titus and Elsie Piper. Also surviving her are her many grandchildren John Canevari, Nikki Piper, Kim Perry, Ericka Guynes, Teresa Canevari, Jeanie Starkey, Heidi Piper, Michelle Egger, Cheri Stornetta, Robert Piper, Dorothy Piper, Jennie Piper, and Kelly Piper. Great grandchildren Casie Smith, Brittany Lowe, Holly Egger, D.J Egger, Justin Sundstrom, Sabrina Sundstrom, Dominic Sahl, Kyle Starkey, Ryan Sundstrom, Robbie McGuire, Piper Casey, Hattie Piper, Billie-Lynn Piper, Isabella Guynes, Claire Guynes great-great granddaughter Adeline Lowe as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jean was the foundation and heart of her family. She spent her entire life from the age of two-years old growing up, raising a family, and running an 8,000 acre sheep/cattle ranch on Mt. View Road in Manchester, CA. Jean was famous for her generosity, hard work, hospitality and global adventures. She loved the outdoors and was a skilled horsewoman, gardener, hunter, fisherwoman, and rancher. Her life spanned wagon travel to hybrid cars. She was a pioneering woman who leaves behind an unforgettable legacy that will be passed down for many generations to come. Her lessons and laughter, never forgotten.
Services will be held at the Methodist Church in Point Arena on Saturday, October 8th at 11 a.m. A celebration of her life will follow at the Grange in Manchester. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Coast Community Library in Point Arena.
