MERTIS MAXINE RUSSELL, born at home in Minden, LA., August 12, 1922, passed from this life Wednesday, December 14, 2011, surrounded by loving family, accomplished her dream to remain home with the assistance of Phoenix Hospice.
Mertis was the remaining survivor of both parents: Walter Everett Williams of Minden, LA., Bessie Gertrude (Sellers) Lowery of Modesto, CA., seven brothers and sisters, her son Ron Gene Coin, as well as both husbands: Jesse Albert Ralph Coin who died in 1964, and Earl Stanley Russell, who died in October, 2011. She is survived by six grandchildren: Ronald Coin Cortez, Donald Coin Cortez, both of Reno, NV., Julie Hazelbaker, and Ronald Eli Coin, both of Modesto, and step children, Karen Verdugo and Randall Russell, both of Woodland, CA., as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law, Sadako Williams of Orangeville, Ca.
This humble, gracious woman will be honored by family and friends at a spring gathering when a Celebration of Life service will be held. Among many achievements during her 89 years, were her passionate love of family, years of involvement in her Baptist church life while living in Modesto; she was a gardener par excellence, and her talent for home décor remarkable. She worked for some years in the Sacramento, CA. DMV, and both she and her husband, Earl, enjoyed traveling the US, Canada and Mexico, in their Toyota motor-home. She and Earl constructed three new homes while living in the Grass Valley – Nevada City area, where they lived for many years prior to moving to Ukiah, where they both lived for ten years prior to their recent deaths.
