Overton Edward Abel III died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on March 25, 2011.
Born July 12, 1934 in Port Arthur, Texas, Ed was a resident of Mendocino County for 22 years. He attended high school in Texas and Illinois; and went to Navy Pier Engineering College in Chicago. Ed was drafted into the US Army in 1955, was stationed in Kentucky where he was promoted to Corporal. Ed was an outstanding marksman and received a medal for his sharpshooting skills.
Ed moved with his family to California in 1959 and attended Diablo Valley College. He became a civil engineer and worked for Contra Costa County for 27 years. He met and married Carol Ann Hamblin in 1960 through mutual friends. They had a long and happy marriage, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on August 20, 2010.
Ed was a car enthusiast, movie buff and a skilled woodworker.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol, sisters Ann Stout, Angela Anderson and Bettye George, daughter Lisa Gamet, daughter Sheila Thornton, four grandchildren, Alana Gaitan, Marshall Gamet, Miles Thornton and Steven Thornton, and two great-grandchildren, Kane Gaitan and Vance Gaitan.
Ed had a wonderful dry wit, loved to quote Mark Twain; was always patient and kind and gave sage advice. He was always willing to help anyone in the family at any time and will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 12 noon at Eversole Mortuary 141 Low Gap Road Ukiah, CA.
