Irene Merk Auger
September 19, 1911 July 12, 2010
Irene was born in San Rafael to George D. Merk and Kate I. Merk and lived most of her life in Ukiah where her family moved around 1919. She attended San Francisco State and the College of San Mateo. After receiving her teaching credential, she taught first grade in Redwood Valley until she married Alan Auger in 1940 and moved to San Francisco for several years. In 1949 Irene returned to Ukiah with Alan and son Richard where she spent the rest of her life.
Irene loved Ukiah and never wanted to live anywhere else. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and active in various community arts and cultural organizations. In her later years she volunteered at the Ukiah library, where she particularly enjoyed reading to children. She also managed the familys retail properties on State Street until her early 90s.
Irene passed away peacefully in her home where she was lovingly cared for by Carolyn (Hope) Summers. She was predeceased by husband Alan in November, 1988 and is survived by her son Richard and his wife Mary Radu, her great-niece Jennifer Fury, and her past daughter-in-law Nina Leslie.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Ukiah on Saturday July 24 at 11:00AM. Memorial gifts may be made to Ukiah Hospice and Phoenix Hospice of Willits to whom the family extends their thanks.
