Resident of Los Gatos, California

Obituary:
Marjorie Smith Baird passed away peacefully on March 19, 2012 at the age of 96 in Los Gatos, CA. She was born on August 30, 1915 to George S. and Laura B. Smith in Salt Lake City, Utah. She had 2 sisters and 1 brother and grew up working in her father’s grocery store. She graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City. During her junior high school years she met her sweetheart, Norman L. Baird and on June 15, 1940 they became husband and wife in a small ceremony in San Francisco, California. She worked at the Mills Tower Building San Francisco for a few years while her husband was in the Army Air Corps serving in Hamilton Field Air Force Base.

After Norm returned from his tour of duty in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Norm and Marge took up residence in Ukiah, California, where they had visited with their baseball friends from that area on numerous occasions and grew to love. They purchased a home on South Dora Street and raised their family of three daughters, Laura, Karen and Wendy.

Marjorie became a secretary for a local law firm, Spurr and Brunner where she stayed for a number of years. In 1962 she became an integral part of the office staff of the local headquarters for the California Highway Patrol. In 1973 she was appointed senior stenographer and office supervisor at the CHP and continued in that position until she retired in October of 1976.

Marjorie was an accomplished pianist and lent her keyboard talents to many occasions including her service to the local ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was equally adept at playing the organ and as a result, was the organist for Sunday meetings every week for many years. Music was one of the loves of her life. She also was an avid baseball fan of her husband and the SF Giants..."Go Giants!" She helped care for her daughter Karen and raise her grand-daughter Kristi. Marjorie lived her last few years with her daughter, Wendy, and family in San Jose, CA. She was so kind and giving. She was much loved by us all and we will miss her greatly. As many said of her “what a sweet, kind lady”.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years and her daughter Karen. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Petersen and son-in law Jack of Spanish Fork, UT , Wendy Yegge and son-in-law Jim of San Jose, CA, 15 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will held on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 11:00 am, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1337 South Dora St., Ukiah, California. The viewing will be at 10:30 am at the same location, prior to the services. Internment will be at the Ukiah City Cemetery, 940 Low Gap Road, Ukiah, California.
