Obituary:
Charmian Ruth Blattner passed peacefully in the early morning hours of September 9, 2010, at the age of 90. Born in Ukiah on April 5, 1920, Charmian was the youngest of four, born to Frank and Goldie Ward. She spent her life as a Mendocino County resident. As a young woman, Charmian explored her entrepreneurial spirit as an owner of a bus company which offered service from Fort Bragg to Napa in the 1940s. She is fondly remembered for her Style Shop on Hwy 128 in Philo, where shoppers could find anything from hosiery to clothing to greeting cards. After years of teaching, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Antioch College’s University without Walls in 1973. And even after retiring from the Mendocino County school system she continued her work, volunteering in classrooms and working at the Unicorn Youth Ranch. A long time columnist for the Anderson Valley Advertiser, readers could learn of the comings and goings of the valley (and Himself) from Charmian’s vantage point. A poet (a selection of her work can be read at www.silentwords.com), artist, musician, teacher and story teller, Charmian left her indelible mark on the Anderson Valley community and those who knew her. She is predeceased by her husband, Simon “Smokey” Blattner, her son Jerry Blattner and her granddaughter, Jennifer Blattner. She is survived by her children, Ernest Blattner of Ukiah and Betty Hoppes of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and daughter-in-law Barbara Tucker Blattner of Philo; her grandchildren and great-grand children and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held on Tuesday, September 14, at 11:00 a.m. at the Boonville Community Methodist Church, followed by a grave side service held at the Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Charmian’s memory to Hospice of Ukiah, Inc. or the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
