Obituary:
Joyce Lowrey Christen passed away at the age of 84 on November 9, 2011. She was born on February 2, 1927 to Wayne Lowrey and Georgia Burger Lowrey in Yorkville, California. Joyce was married to Clifford Christen on August 19, 1950 in Cloverdale. Joyce had four daughters: Catherine Christen of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Mary Christen Crighton (David) of San Mateo; Joan Tortorici (Guy) of Grass Valley; and Laurie Sheppard (Paul) of McKinleyville. She had 6 grandchildren: Andrew Crighton; Alexandra and Benjamin Sheppard; and Edward (Ted), Jack, and Grace Tortorici. Joyce is also survived by a foster sister, Lucille Scilacci of Ferndale and her cousin, Gary Campbell of Saratoga. Joyce graduated from San Jose State with a teaching credential in business education. Her first teaching position was at Ferndale Union High School, where she taught for 5 years, and then resumed her teaching position in Ferndale after her children were raised. She resided in Eureka for a number of years, and then retired to Yorkville at her parents ranch where she grew up. Joyce was curator and a board member of the Anderson Valley Historical Museum for a number of years after her retirement. Joyce was a descendent of Anderson Valley pioneer families, including the Gschwend, Guntly, Burger, Ledford, Lowrey, Adams and Stubblefield families. She was very interested in the history of Anderson Valley and local family genealogy. She assisted in editing historical books and collected photographs, farm equipment and other items from Anderson Valley families for the museum. She was also a very active member of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Philo and St Peters Church in Cloverdale.
Funeral services are being handled by Eversole Mortuary in Ukiah. A Rosary will be held for Joyce on Sunday, November 13, at 7:00 PM at St. Peters Church, 491 S Franklin St, in Cloverdale. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 14, at 11:00 AM at St. Peters Church with Father Thomas Devereaux officiating. Burial will follow at the Yorkville Cemetery.
