Obituary:
Jean Bartlett (Schoen) Chubon
Jean Alice Chubon died March 19th 2011, from lung cancer, even though she never smoked. She was born February 21, 1941, to George and Zella Bartlett, long time Ukiah owners of Bartlett Oil & Burner Company. She attended Ukiah Elementary and Pomolita and she graduated from Ukiah High School with the class of 1959. In 1962 Jean earned her BA degree in English from Chico State College. Jean was married in 1963 to James G. (Garry) Schoen and moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1964 when Garry took up a teaching assistantship at The University of Michigan, and Jean worked in the Graduate Library. After 11 years in Michigan and Wisconsin, the couple returned to Ukiah, where Garry taught at Ukiah High School and Jean worked in the high school library.
After her husband died in 1989, Jean made several trips to the United Kingdom, hiking and sightseeing during summer vacations. Lightning is said not to strike twice, but in Jeans case she was wooed and wed in 1994 to the other love of her life, Dave Chubon, then U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manager of Lake Mendocino.
Dave and Jean traveled to several national and state parks to hike and Jean eventually lured Dave to Britain to spend three weeks hiking and visiting a dear friend whom she met on her earlier trips.
In 2004 Jean retired after 29 years at the high school library, but continued to catalog and classify books at the library, as a consultant and later as a volunteer under librarian Charlene Holbrooks supervision. In the spring of 2010 Jean was honored with a bronze plaque that recognized her over 50 years of library service that began at the Ukiah Public Library when she was in high school, continued through college and during her years in the mid-west.
Jean is survived by her husband Dave, his son Troy and granddaughter Chantelle of Lincoln, CA and his son Brian and grandson Anthony of Oakdale, CA. She is also survived by her dear aunt, Alice Zeller, her cousins Judith Koch of Ukiah, Joe and Yvette Zeller of Redwood Valley, and Dina (Jason) King of Los Angeles, and many other relatives and friends too numerous to list. Words can never suffice to recognize the love and friendship of Jeans two best friends, Nancy and Barbara, who over the years maintained a comradeship of incomparable joys and sometimes sorrows.
Jean had a passion for books and reading, so in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Ukiah High School Library c/o Charlene Holbrook 1000 Low Gap Road Ukiah, CA 95482, would be welcome. Having served briefly on the board of the Ukiah Symphony, Jean recognized the importance of this civic asset, in her honor a donation would be appreciated. Her last 12 weeks were greatly eased by the care of Phoenix Hospice and the wonderful nurses, and the compassionate voices at the other end of the telephone line. As acknowledgement for the extraordinary care of Phoenix Hospice a contribution to them would be appropriate.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Eversole Mortuary. Following services family and friends are invited to the Saturday Afternoon Club 107 S. Oak Street Ukiah, CA 95482
