William Herschel Cleland
Memorial services for William Herschel Cleland of Ukiah will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at the Ukiah First Baptist Church. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 from 12 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Eversole Mortuary. Bill passed away peacefully on Friday, August 27, 2010 at Ukiah Valley Medical Center with his family by his side.
Born January 27, 1921 in San Francisco to Herschel and Frances Cleland, he moved to Ukiah with his family as an infant. Bill graduated from Ukiah High School in 1939 and was a High School Football All-American in 1937 & 1938. He graduated from University of California at Berkeley in 1943 and from Midshipmen School in Chicago and served in the U.S. Navy until the end of WWII on the USS South Dakota. He worked as a pear farmer in Potter Valley, as an insurance agent and a real estate agent during his full life in the Ukiah Valley.
Bill was a great story teller who always had an interest in the lives of his family and friends. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Bill is survived by his wife Helen Cleland, his son Rick Cleland and wife Joyce, grandchildren Travis and Shelby Cleland, nephew Kit Cleland and wife Carol of Sacramento, nieces Cindy Haug and husband Charlie of Santa Cruz, and Holly Chapin and husband Clair of Oakland. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. H.O. Cleland and Frances Marguerite Cleland, his brother Tom, his sister Jean, his former wife Irene Sandelin and their son Bill Cleland and his second wife of over 35 years Margaret Cleland.
Memorial contributions may be made on his behalf to the Ukiah High School Alumni Association 1000 Low Gap Road in Ukiah, Ukiah Dolphins Swim & Water Polo teams P.O. Box 635 in Ukiah or Mendocino Historical Society 603 W. Perkins St. in Ukiah.
