Passed away on October 17th ,2011 with loving family
by his side. Jim was born in Ukiah on March 15, 1929 to
Vera and William and grew up on their beloved ranch in
Boonville. William was a 4th generation Clow to live in
Anderson Valley. One of his greatest loves was growing
up on the ranch, running the hills, hunting, and
horseback riding. Jim was a sheep, cattle and horse
rancher but his passion was to show and train Cutting
Horses. He loved the cowboy life and was always a
cowboy at heart.
He graduated from AV High School in 1947 and soon after was drafted by Cal
Poly University to pitch for their baseball team. William played for Cal Poly just
one year and his mother, Vera, would say He would have stayed longer if they
would have put a pile of horse manure on home plate He returned home to take
over and run the family sheep ranch.
He married the love of his life, Bernice, in 1948 and they raised two sons, Bill
& Lindsay. He spent the majority of his adult life as the Mendocino County Fair
Manager and retired from that role in 2000. After retirement he spent his time
caring for his horses and enjoying time with his family. Jim had many friends and
will be remembered for his quick wit and great sense of humor. He loved kids
and always had great stories to tell. He was so much fun to be around because
you never knew what he would say next. His bright smile will be missed.
For 56 years Jim was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association
and became one of the founders of the Sonoma Branch of the Pacific Coast
Cutting Horse Association.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, his two sons Bill and Lindsay, his
grandchildren Gretchen, Alicia, Natalie, Jessie and Les, two great-grandchildren
Katelyn and Bobby, as well as his much loved dog, Ruby, a 14 year old Jack
Russell terrier.
