Obituary
Lynde Cecilia Cook
February 27, 1963 November 7, 2013
On Thursday evening, November 7, 2013, Lynde Cook, beautiful and cherished daughter of Waldo and Lois Cook, lost her long fight with lung cancer. Lynde was born at Ukiah General Hospital. She lived the first 18 years of her life on Robinson Creek Ranch where she and her four siblings played, swam, hiked, rode horses, raised pets and enjoyed other pleasures of a country childhood. She attended public schools in Ukiah where she was active in the marching band and many sports. Softball was one of her lifelong loves and through the sport she made many friends who would remain with her to the end. After high school she attended Sacramento State University and remained for several years in the city working and playing in softball leagues and tournaments including several All-State Championships. While in Sacramento, Lynde joined the National Guard, and subsequently served overseas during Desert Storm. She enjoyed other cultures and some of her favorite travel memories were of trips to Guatemala, South Africa, and her service time in Saudi Arabia.
On August 28, 1994, Lyndes son, Jalen Michael Cook, was born in Sacramento. Lynde always said Jalen was the best part of her life. Lynde soon returned to Ukiah with Jalen where she worked at the Ukiah Valley Medical Center as a medical assistant. She subsequently became a dispatcher for the California Highway Patrol where she worked until her medical retirement in 2012. She loved her work as a dispatcher because she could interact and help people. As one of her colleagues put it: Thank you for watching over us. The invisible voice in the skies of Ukiah is now the invisible voice in the Heavens above. She was gregarious and made many friends at first encounter. She had a quick wit and could always see a humorous side, even when she was ill. Friends and family will remember her for her smile, and how she made them smile.
Lynde is survived by her son, Jalen Cook of Ukiah, mother, Lois Cook of Ukiah, sisters, Rhoby Cook (Joseph) of Hoopa, CA, and Kristy Cook (Steve) of Takoma Park, MD, and brother, Kirby Cook of Hamilton, MT. She was predeceased by her father, Waldo Cook, and brother, Randy Cook. Lynde had many, many friends. Many of these helped and supported her during her cancer treatment, and the family would especially like to thank Lyndes Ladies, a generous, loving group of friends. The family also thanks the Ukiah Cancer Resource Center, and Dr. Hardy and his wonderful staff for their kindness and care.
Lynde will be cremated and her ashes laid to rest in a private ceremony at Ukiah Cemetery. Those who wish to bid Lynde good-bye and pay respects will be welcomed at Eversole Mortuary on November 21, 4-6pm. A celebration of her life will be held on January 11, 2014 at the Mendo-Lake Club House. Donations may be made to the Ukiah Cancer Resource Center at 590 S. Dora Street in Ukiah, the National Foundation for Cancer Research, or the Lynde C. Cook Memorial Athletic Scholarship through Ukiah High School.
