Papa Joe Cornejo
Joe L. Cornejo passed away on Monday, July 30, 2012. He was 90 years old. Born May 17, 1922 to Juan Cornejo and Dolores Benard on San Anita Rancho which was then Owen Lucky Baldwin and now is known as Alley Arbuream where many movies were shot such as “Tarzan of the Apes” and “Fantasy Island”. The ranch was broke up and became part of the San Anita racetrack in the city of Arcadia. Joe later moved with his family to Azusa and lived and worked the Dalton Rancho in 1938. Joe was part of the CC organization. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and ran his own unit. When World War II broke out Joe joined the US Navy as a gunners mate. He rose in the capacity to a pointer in charge of the gun tub. Three ammunition ships sank under him and only on one of three being one of three survivors. After the war, Joe met his wife Betty Snyder in Duarte where she worked as a waitress at a roadside café on Route 66. Later on Joe started working for United Concrete where he worked for 32 years rising to the rank of foreman. In that time Joe and his wife Betty of 65 years raised two kids, Don and Cheryl and approximately 30 foster kids. Joe retired at an early age from United Concrete and moved his family to his present location in Redwood Valley where he has resided, raising fish for Fish and Game and during that time he became head of running the water company for the Black Bart Trail Homeowners Association. Joe was an avid fisherman, fishing and making many friends fishing the Russian River and Lake Mendocino. Joe was security at the Lake Mendocino Marina for a period of time. Joe was also a nature lover, feeding the many deer and wild turkeys on his property. The deer would come up and eat out of his hand. Joe is part Spanish and French but mostly Apache Indian. Papa had a saying “Right’s right and wrong’s wrong”. Joe’s father rode with Poncho Villa for 3 years. That is one of the many adventures of his past.
Joe is survived by his wife Betty, his brother Johnny Cornejo of Crescent City, CA, son Don Miller of Santa Barbara, daughter Cheryl Williams of Fallon, Nevada and grandchildren Samuel Evans, Tami Zamarripa, Leesah Piver and her husband Jeff Piver, Kateri Cramer, Joseph Williams, Shelly Miller, Rochele Miller, Nicole Miller and Suzie Miller also numerous great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be at Eversole Mortuary on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
