Obituary:
Evelyn Braga Costa (Maria
Evelina) died on Monday, Nov.
12, 2018, at Mendocino Coast
District Hospital. Born on Aug.
8, 1938, at Sao Miguel, Azores,
Portugal, to Manuel and Evelina
Braga, she was 80 years old.
Although she never had any
children of her own, her
cherished Godchild, Aida, was
like her daughter, in every way.
They have always had a beautiful, loving bond that
never waivered through the years. She helped raise her
and care for her and even brought her to America in
1959 to join the rest of the family, already here. Also,
equally special is her other Goddaughter, Kayla, who
has been a wonderful, caring and devoted young lady
right until the day she passed. Her two other
Godchildren, Pedro and Alda, were also very involved
in her day-to-day care as her health declined.
In 1959, from a photograph it was love at first sight.
Our uncle Albert purchased a wedding dress and flew
to the Azores to propose to her, and the rest, as they
say, is history.
Always putting her family and friends first with
selfless acts of kindness, love and support, our
beloved Aunt made sure that her close-knit family
remained close always. She was a great cook,
impeccable seamstress and made a wonderful home
for her and her husband, Albert.
She enjoyed taking care of Alina, Kayla and Leila as
they were growing up and started a tradition of
Thursday night dinners for almost 29 years. (Spaghetti
was one of their favorites.) She baked Massa,
malassadas and cavacas for the entire family at
holidays. She worked in her flower garden until late at
night. Shopping and Sunday drives were her favorite
pastimes.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of 59 years,
Albert L. Costa; brothers, Jose Braga, John and Maria
Inez Braga and Richard and Charla Braga;
Godchildren, Pedro Mello, Aida Ornelas, Alda Mello-
Garcia and Kayla Ornelas. Also surviving her are
numerous nieces who were very close to her heart:
Alina Ornelas, Leila Ornelas, Jesieka Grover-Silva and
Maria Grover. And last but, not least, her precious
nephew, Ryan Ornelas.
She was predeceased by her parents, Manuel and
Evelina Braga; siblings: Maria Eduarda Ornelas,
Manuel Braga, Maria Alda Melo and Antone Braga;
and of course, her treasured dog, Lulu.
We love and miss you. You will be forever in our
hearts.
