Obituary:
Jerome Joseph Dix
died unexpectedly on January 5, 2016. Jerome was born in Oakland on December 29, 1948 to Jerome and Della Dix, first of seven children. He graduated from Ygnacio Valley High School in 1967. During high school he played football and was on the wrestling team. He was also a ham radio operator. After graduation Jerome attended Diablo Valley College. In 1969 Jerome enlisted in the US Navy and served as a radioman. He was stationed aboard the USS Hornet, the Prime Recovery Ship for Apollo 11, America’s first lunar landing mission, and witnessed the splashdown of the spacecraft Columbia on July 29, 1969, during the recovery of astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collings. The President of the United States and Admiral John McCain were onboard the Hornet to greet the returning astronauts. Jerome was a self- employed Electrical Contractor – Dix Electric. Jerome owned a small vineyard in Mendocino County since 1988. He was a strong proponent of natural resource management. Jerome was a Master Gardener since 1991. He was on the Russian River Watershed Council Board of Directors and a past President. Jerome served as Director on the Mendocino Resource Conservation District since 2003. Serving as the Board Chair most recently for 2014-2015 fiscal year. Jerome will be deeply missed by his wife Duane (Dee). He is survived by his father, five siblings, his stepdaughter and two grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. A Veterans funeral service will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon, CA, Thursday, January 28th at 1:00p.m. Memorial Donations to: American Heart Association or any Veterans organization.
