Obituary:
Ambrose Franklin Duncan Sr. passed away at home on April 17, 2016 at the age of 93.
He was born on the Round Valley Indian Reservation (Covelo, CA) to the late Birdie Anderson and John F. Duncan.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Grace M. (Williams) Duncan. (12-29-16 to 3-17-14)
He leaves behind his children, Ambrose F. Duncan Jr., Dolly (Duncan) Case (Fred) of Fort Jones, CA, Donald Duncan (Ida) of Ukiah, CA, Phillip Duncan of Ukiah CA, step daughter Betty Verdugo of Ukiah, CA, niece Erma Crabtree of Ukiah, CA, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
Ambrose graduated from Round Valley High School in 1941.
On May 8, 1942 at the age of 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, he was shipped overseas where he spent 15 months in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. While serving in World War II he was the Sergeant Squad leader of the 100th Army Rangers.
In France in November 1944 he was wounded in action, which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Also he was issued a good conduct medal, a Middle Eastern campaign medal, American campaign medal and a World War II Victory medal.
On January 25, 1946 he separated from the Armed Forces and returned back to the US. That's when he found the love of his life Grace. They married on September 2, 1946 in Ukiah, CA and this is where they lived for the rest of their lives together.
He began his working career at various jobs, a sawmill worker for the Union Lumber Co., laborer for the Northwest Pacific Railroad, Jeff Wong Laundry, Masonite Corp. and a security guard for the Gold Star Patrol.
In 1976 he started as a correctional officer for the Mendocino County Sheriffs Office until his retirement on April 28, 1988.
Our dad will be remembered as a man who was hard-working, always provided for his family and gave a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him. We know that he is happy to be re-united with his wife Grace.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Eversole Mortuary. A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2016 from 4 8 p.m at the mortuary. Interment will be in Ukiah Cemetery.
