Obituary:
Elberg, Dr Sanford Samuel (Sandy) Born Dec 1, 1913 San Francisco and died April 8, 2011 in Ukiah, California with his family by his side. Sandy attended Lowell High School in San Francisco and received his undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the University California at Berkeley. During WW2 he served as an officer at Fort Detrick Maryland. As Professor of Bacteriology and Immunology at the University of California Berkeley, Sandy was responsible for the development of the Rev-1 Brucellosis vaccine. As a member of the World Health Organization, he traveled the world introducing his vaccine, which remains in wide use today. He was appointed Dean of the Graduate Division at Berkeley in 1961, and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1978. Following retirement, he accepted a position as head of the University California Overseas Program in Great Britain. He served as interim head of the Graduate Theological Union and acting Provost of the Professional Schools at U.C. Berkeley. Sandy was the recipient of the Berkeley Citation (1979) the Clark Kerr Award (1984), and the Sanford Elberg Lectureship in International Studies (1988). He married Sylvia Marans in 1943. He is survived by his daughter Cassandra Elberg-Gibson, his son Graeme, son-in-law Chris Gibson, grandchildren Riley and Kira Gibson, niece Laura Sardis, husband Howard and children Taryn and Amanda. He was widely admired and respected, and known for his wonderful smile and positive attitude. He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Sandys life will be held May 6, 2011, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Gibson home.
