Merle Taylor Fenter
Merle Taylor Fenter died at home December 18, 2013, while being cared for by her daughters. She was born in Clarkesville, Georgia in 1923 on the family farm. She graduated from Tallulah Falls High School in Tallulah Falls, Georgia. She lived and worked in Atlanta during World War II, where she met Willis Duke (Bud) Fenter and they married in 1944. After the war, they located in California, settling in Ukiah in 1956. She worked for Masonite Corporation in Ukiah for 27 years.
Merle loved to cook (she made the best southern fried chicken), stubbornly rejecting fast food and take-out options. Her lovely garden was full of beautiful flowers and veggies; she enjoyed traveling the world with her family and friends, sewing, and her Bunco group. For many years, Merle was involved with Eastern Star and accompanied Duke in Masonic Lodge and Pomo Shrine Club activities.
Merles husband Duke died one year ago. She was also preceeded in death by her brother Lloyd Taylor, sister Lois Starr and brother Arden Taylor; nephew Marc Sissons, father- and mother-in-law Mark and Fern Fenter and sister- and brother-in-law Lorraine and Gilbert Sissons.
Merle is survived by her daughters Ashala (née Linda) Lawler (Brian) of San Luis Obispo; Susan Lewis (David) of Los Alamos, New Mexico; grandsons Matthew Benjamin (Jillian), Andy Benjamin and Patrick Lawler; sister Ovelle Harper, brother Hugh Taylor (Doris) and sister-in-law Sarah Taylor and many Taylor nieces and nephews; nephews Gilbert Sissons II (Judy) and Chris Sissons (Cynthia); grand niece Shelly Cheneweth (Taff) and their children Blake and Lilly; grand nephews Jack Sissons, and Gilbert Sissons III (Melissa) and their children Abigail and Joshua.
Merle was the superstar of homemade birthday cakes, and knew precisely which kind each family member loved best. She thrived on hosting her family and friends in her home for holiday meals, summer barbecues, and special occasions. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to Phoenix Hospice of Willits. At Merles request, there will not be a service.
