Obituary:
Richard H. Finch of Ukiah, California went to the Lord on May 23, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. Dick was born in 1925 and raised in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, the son of Ben and Leola Finch. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps, Fifth Marine Division at the young age of 17, at the time of World War II. He was present at the historic battle of Iwo Jima. While stationed in Hawaii he met his future wife Eleanor they were married in 1945. After his tour of duty he spent 3 years working for an Automobile Factory in Michigan. He then returned to Hawaii and was hired by the Territory of Hawaii Survey Party and soon after transferred to the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. During this time, he and his family traveled and surveyed through all 50 States and were also sent to Puerto Rico for 9 months. Richard was sent to Long Island, New York and worked at the research facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory where he established the survey control points that were used to place the 240 magnets around the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. He was then sent to Alaska on 3 occasions, once was to survey and monitor the earth’s movement after the Big Earth Quake that his Anchorage, Alaska in 1964, it was the third most powerful ever measured by seismograph.
He finally settled his family in Ukiah, California in 1967. For the next 13 years he worked for the Ukiah Latitude Observatory, which was one of five observatories in the world.
Richard worked for the Federal Service for 34 ½ years before retiring at the age of 55. After his retirement he worked at the Ukiah Municipal Golf course and Brook Trails Golf Course in Willits. He enjoyed being the sound engineer for the Band “Ducky and the Band”. He was a member of the Elks Club and Knights of Columbus for many years.
Richard and Eleanor raised three children, Scot Finch, Mark Finch and Tracie Salcido and have 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
There will be no formal services, as previously request by our father. Entombment will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
