Arnold was one of five children born to Hanby and Ula Ford December 16, 1925 in Ukiah, CA Arnold lived in Ukiah/Redwood Valley area all of his life .
After graduating from Ukiah High School Arnold joined the Army during World War 11. Serving with the 82nd Airborne they made their way onto Omaha Beach, Germany to fight the war. Arnold also fought at the Battle of the Bulge. One of his daughters was able to locate an old army buddy now living in New York. They talked for hours on the phone but were never able to get together because of the distance between them.. After the war Arnold came home and Married the love of his life Gloria Bishop. Arnold and Gloria were married for 50 years and had four children.
Arnold was a proud member of the Redwood Valley/Calpella volunteer Fire Department for many years He was also a founding member of the Redwood Riders Horse club. Arnold and Gloria, planned many events including the start of “Black Bart Days” parade, trail rides and play days to keep their children active.
Arnold worked many jobs after coming home from the Army. In the 1960's Arnold and Gloria purchased "The Firs" as the ranch has been called for years. Working at Borden’s Dairy, Shell Oil Company and then the Mendocino County Farm Supply. Arnold semi-retired concentrating on his vineyard, expanding and planting different varieties of grapes for the co-op he belonged to, Guild Winery and then Cresta Blanca Winery. In 1986 Arnold sold “The Firs" and bought a little piece of land on the other end of Lake Mendocino Dr.
Arnold was devoted to his family and friends. Loving the outdoors, he enjoyed hunting trips to Modoc, fishing at Hat Creek, gardening and cutting firewood. Arnold’s biggest accomplishment in life was his Family. After losing Gloria in 1997, Arnold’s home became the "gathering place" most day's and weekends you could count on family being there with him. Arnold was GRANDPA to most all his grandkids and great grandkids friends, he loved them all dearly. Arnold will be missed for many things besides the love he gave to so many people throughout his life.
The family wishes to extend gratitude to Hospice of Ukiah for their compassionate and caring services during this past year. A very special thank you to Brenda, Cheryl, Charlie and Roland. The family also wishes to thank Shirley Schumacher Arnolds VA nurse for all the support she has given to each one of us over the years.
