Eloise Grothe died Monday, July 24th. Born in Texas on August 2, 1934, Eloises family moved to The Valley when she was a toddler. She moved to Ukiah shortly after graduating from Merced High School, and made it her home for over 60 years.
Eloise worked in banking her entire career, advancing from teller to Bank Manager in 1976. She was recognized for her excellence in customer service, ethics, and community involvement. In a male dominated industry, Eloise often trained co-workers (men) that were often paid more than she.
She joined Soroptimist, a volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in 1977. She remained a member for the rest of her life achieving lifetime status with 40 years of membership. Soroptimist members graciously continued their weekly lunch meetings throughout her last summer months to show their support and generosity and love towards Eloise.
Eloise served on the Mendocino County Board of Retirement for 10 years from 1999 to 2009. They recognized her service this way: Eloise, though known for being soft spoken, was unwavering in her convictions and a welcome voice of wisdom to the Board of Retirement. She also served on the Senior Center Endowment board.
Well known for her love of bunny collectibles, she also loved to garden, and was always eager to share her Meyer lemons with all, including any passers-by. She loved to travel with both family and friends and visited places such as London, Paris, Panama Canal, Hawaii, Alaska, and Italy. Eloise was also known for her love of painting: painting of kitchen cabinets, bedroom walls, living room walls, front door
.
Eloise developed and maintained many long-term friendships throughout her life. She enjoyed her many years of Bunko, even though it required she turn on her stove to prepare one meal a year. One of her greatest joys, up until the very end of her life, was going out to eat with her friends.
She is survived by her children, Cindi (Tony) Mainprize and Scott (Amanda) Grothe. She is survived by numerous cousins and her favorite, Uncle Al. She leaves behind an amazing community of loving friends who helped enrich and extend her life.
