Obituary:
Myrl Lorene Harpe passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, January 27, 2014 and the skies cried for days.
Born Myrl Lorene Smith to Otto William Smith and Verda Ruth Gilmer on November 11, 1922 in Otto, New Mexico. Attended the Fort Worth Independent School District and Fort Worth Poly Technic High School. Myrl first started working as a bookkeeper at the age of 16. She met her future husband Lilburn L. Harpe while working at the PX at Tinker Field in Oklahoma. They married October 17, 1944 in Jacksonville, Florida. The Marine Corps moved them around to Hawaii and South Carolina where Myrl went to work for Charles Frasier. She was one of four, first employees of what is now the large resort known as Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. During their years of service Myrl always maintained the duties of an officers wife fulfilling those requirements without falter. With Lilburns retirement, the family moved back to his hometown area (Hopland). They ended up settling in Ukiah where Myrl went to work for a second time for the County of Mendocino. This time for the Youth Project during the startup of Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. She then took the position of Secretary to the Superintendent of County Schools, retiring in 1987.
Myrl enjoyed traveling and often visited Hawaii and also traveled to Ireland, Greece and Japan. She was active in Emblem Club, the Wandering Wapitis and a member of the Red Hat Society. She was with TOPS and KOPS. Myrl was a bridge player and also liked pinochle and bunko.
Myrl was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. Lilburn L Harpe (ret), her parents Otto W. Smith and Verda R. McCreary, her sisters Jeanne Barnes, Lucille Smith and dear friends Norman and Eileen Island.
Myrl is survived by her children Larry and Suzanne (Hartman) Harpe, Sharon (Harpe) and Rick Knight, Scott and Cindy (Golab) Harpe, Jeffrey and Christy (Sparks) Harpe, Donnie and Kathleen (Lindburg) Harpe, fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, brother and sister in law Ernest and Eleanor (Pacini) Harpe, sister in law Virginia (Schindler) Harpe and numerous nieces and nephews.
Myrl touched the lives of many and she will be missed by all who knew her. Those wishing to celebrate and share in the life of Myrl are encouraged to join us.
Viewing will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014 from noon to 8:00 p.m. at Eversole Mortuary. Services will be held at Eversole Mortuary in Ukiah, California on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. followed by graveside services at the Hopland Cemetery in Hopland, California. Reception to follow at Todd Grove Park Clubhouse.
Memorial donations to local charities preferred i.e. Hospice, Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club etc.
