Our beloved father and grandfather passed away peacefully with family at his side on Thursday morning in Vacaville at the age of 88.
Born in Daly City to Swiss immigrant parents, he learned about hard work at an early age selling newspapers on a street corner in Oakland when he was in the second grade.
He graduated from Fort Jones High School, and a year later enrolled in
Humboldt State College. At mid‐point in his college years he enlisted in the Navy, attending St. Mary pre‐fight and flew corsairs off the USS Essex. He was a star running back at St. Mary Pre‐fight and at Humboldt State University. He was inducted into the HSU Athletic Hall Of Fame in 1985.
His 36‐year career as a teacher, counselor and coach (football, track &
basketball) began at Tulelake High School, continued at Ferndale High School and concluded with 28 years at Ukiah High.
Janice Bruner Iten, his wife of 50 years, preceded him in death. He is
