Obituary:
Dr. Margery L. Jackson, 92, a much beloved mom, grandma and aunt passed away peacefully on March 6, 2014 in Ukiah, California. She was the wife of the late John “Weldon” Jackson, and the mother of Kathryn Ortega of Ukiah and James Leithliter of San Francisco.
Margery was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 23, 1921 and grew up primarily in Buffalo and Kenmore, New York. She was a proud graduate of State University of New York at Buffalo in Education. She moved to California in 1945 and taught home economics for many happy years in the Lancaster School District where she became the psychologist for the district after obtaining her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from California State University, Northridge.
She continued her education and received her Ph. D. from United States International University in San Diego. She left the educational field to pursue a career in the private sector. She was one of the founders and directors of the Narcotics Education and Rehabilitation Project which provided counseling and intervention, and established one of the first crisis “hot lines” in California.
Along with her private practice, she and her husband established drinking-driver programs in San Bernardino County with several offices. In 1981, she was selected as Outstanding Alumni Graduate by SUNY, Buffalo. After long and successful careers, Margery and Weldon retired and moved to Ukiah in 2001 to be close to Margery’s daughter, Kathy.
Throughout her life, Margery had a love of traveling, reading, and playing bridge. She enjoyed meeting and visiting with people; there was never a dull moment when you were in her company. She loved animals, especially dogs. She was also passionate about her involvement with AAUW, the American Association of University Women, her involvement spanned more than 50 years.
Margery is survived by her daughter and son, son-in-law-Robert Ortega, daughter-in-law-Ann Leithliter; her grandchildren- Jordan, Alexandra, and Simone Ortega, and Eric and Amy Leithliter; and her nieces and nephews. They will all miss her very much.
The family would like to thank Margery’s caregivers: Jeanette Nelson, Holy Child Residential Care, and Ukiah Healthcare for their kind and good care. A private ceremony is to be held, Eversole Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
