He passed away May 31, 2014 in his new home in Redwood Valley surrounded by his family after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 58 years, Carol. He has six grandchildren: Allison Jacobszoon, Sam Jacobszoon and wife Nicole ( French); Kelsey Bryant, Eric Bryant; Hillary Ferris (Calleri) and husband Brian Ferris, and Andy Calleri.
Dow was raised in San Diego and graduated from Hoover High School in 1950. After High School graduation Dow joined Drew Motor Company in La Mesa, CA. He is fond of stating shortly there after he received a personal letter from President Truman stating he has been selected by his friends and neighbors to join the US Army. So for the next two years he served in the Korean war, working as a mechanic for the US Army motor pool. After his service he returned to Drew Motors and enjoyed 15 years as a parts salesman and parts department manager.
Dow spent most vacations with his family in Northern California visiting Carols Brother Jim, a forester with the US Forest Service. He decided that he wanted to be a forester as well, and in 1967 he left Drew Motors and moved to Arcata, CA to attend Humboldt State. Dow earned a Bachelors of Science in Forestry, graduation in 1970. The family moved again to Fort Bragg, CA where he started he forestry career with Bois Cascade. Dow worked as a forester and eventually resources manager, administering timberland operations on the companys 220,000 acre tree farm. In 1988 he was transferred to Jackson, CA after the Georgia Pacific (GP) purchase of American Forest Products and managed their timberland operations up until 1995, when he retired after 25 years with GP.
He and Carol greatly enjoyed his retirement, remodeling their home in Jackson, entertaining family and friends, and traveling many miles in the travel trailer, as well as flying to all parts of the world. In 2012 he and Carol sold their lovely home in Jackson and bought a home in Redwood Valley.
Dow felt it important to give back to the community working as an advocate for Paul Bunyans Parents and friends, Salmon Restoration and Annual Barbeque, and the Redwood Region Conservation Council. In Jackson, he and Carol worked tirelessly for the annual Christmas Committee Food Drive.
Carol and her children would like of you that fondly remember Dow to join them at the home of Randy and Sheri at 8050 Pinecrest Drive, Redwood Valley at 1:00 PM on July 19, 2014.
