Oluf (Ole) Charles Johansen passed away peacefully on December 9, 2014 in Palm Desert, California. His family is comforted by the knowledge that he is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Ole Johansen was born on January 18, 1931 in Eureka, California to Norwegian immigrant Oluf A. Johansen and Bernice L. (Steeves) Johansen, a native of California. Ole is Survived by his wife, Janet E. (Bilstein) Johansen; sister, Mary Peterson; step-son, Jack Klaisner; daughter, Mary Ellen Gilmore; son, Oluf L. Johansen; daughter, Barbara J. Hanger; son, Kenneth C. Johansen; daughter, Kimberly L. Johansen; step son Hans C Andersen cousin Vern Morrison; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren—all of whom he loved dearly.
Ole proudly served in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years, which included service during the Vietnam War for which he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal. He achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer and during his career he was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal and four Good Conduct Medals. Following his honorable discharge from active duty, Ole served the U.S. Navy for an additional 20 years as a Civil Service employee in the capacity of an electronics mechanic. In his retirement, he remained an active member of the VFW and Disabled Veteran’s Association of Desert Hot Springs, California where he and Janet kept their winter “snow bird” home.
During his 83 years in this world Ole touched countless lives with his gracious spirit of generosity. Many friends and family members were greatly blessed by Ole’s loving heart and quick humor, which never wavered to the end. He will be deeply missed by us all.
Family and friends are invited to attend memorial services which will be held May 9, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Eversole Mortuary, 141 Low Gap Rd. Ukiah, Ca9548 The service will be followed by a gathering at the home of Warren and Linda Bilstein, 56 Betty St. Ukiah, CA 95482.
