Obituary:
In loving memory of Mark King
Mark King passed away peacefully in Ukiah on June 18, 2013.
Mark King was an extraordinary man who was full of life and love. His life was a light that illuminated and touched the lives of all his family and friends.
Mark was born Francis Marcellus King, Jr. in King City, California on May 29, 1922 to Mendocino County natives, Charlotte and Mark King Sr. He lived in Ukiah for 90 of his 91 years of life. After serving in the U.S. Army for four years and returning to Ukiah, he married his beloved wife of 61 years, Nancy, and together they raised 14 children.
Mark served as a fireman for the Ukiah Fire Department for 27 years; additionally, he was an independent contractor and "jack of all trades". If it was broken...he could fix it, so much so that his 11 daughters grew up thinking all men were so handy! Many a son-in-law thanked him for that! It was important to him to pass on to his children and grandchildren his core values of honesty, integrity, humor and kindness; all of which he had in abundance. He was a proud man.
Mark retired from UFD in 1984 and enjoyed a very active retirement - whether he was assisting one of his children with home improvements, tinkering with golf carts, playing cards with his family and friends, or enjoying a day at the golf course, Mark always lived with purpose. The large King family home was a hub of activity, and Mark and Nancys love of life, family, and friends was always evident.
In the Kingdom of Heaven, Mark will join Nancy, his life partner; their son Bradford King; and daughter Mary Bridges.
Mark is survived by his brother Bob (Barbara), and his children Renee Jones, Christine Feehan, Matthew King, Ruth Powell, Dianne Fetzer, Bobbi King, Jeannette Witzel, Denise Bussey, Elizabeth Castillejo, Lisa Cortina, Phillip King, and Nanci Williams; along with 63 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.
He is also survived by Anita Toste, Darryl Bridges, and the loving companion of his final years, his wife Charlotte Watkins, and her three children.
Mark King lived with honor, and his example of dignity and dedication continues to serve multiple generations of his family and friends. His infectious smile and mighty laugh will be long remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
A Mass in his honor will be held at St. Marys of the Angels Catholic Church on June 21, 2013 at 4:00 PM. This will be followed by a gathering at 1430 Wildwood Rd (Deerwood Park), Ukiah. Donations may be made in memory of Mark King to St. Judes Children Research Hospital, Attn: Tributes Dept., 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
