When a young adult he joined the Marines and served twenty years. He was deployed three times, during the Gulf War era. He was a Forward Observer, United States Marine Corp. Gunnery Sargent. His nick name Hawkeye, was on account of his sense of humor and how often he made people laugh. He retired to help with his two daughters and lived in southern and northern California. He had a career in car sales, and in car service for nineteen years. He was currently employed at Thurston Dodge in Ukiah California. When Steve walked in a room everything blew up with laughter and his character was impeccable. He is survived by his wife Cathy of Ukiah, married twelve years. His mother Edith Stock, predeceased by his stepfather Francis Stock. Survived by his daughters Maria Lair of San Jose, California, Laurie Lair (Justin) of Hemet California. Granddaughters Kalani, Madison, Tatum and Hailyn. Predeceased by grandparents, Maria and Nicholas Lair of Pennsylvania. Predeceased by Uncle Nicholas Lair, survived by Aunt Leona. Survived by Aunt Elsie Sprauer, (William) predeceased by Aunt Erna Van Horn, (Lee) and survived currently by numerous cousins residing in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida. He is survived by his Father in law John (Beverly) Hines, sister in laws Sharon (Ken) Foster, Jennifer Plummer, niece Hannah and nephew Warren Foster, of Potter Valley. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Angels Church starting at 9:00 am on July 7, 2017 followed by a graveside Military Service, approximately 10:00 am. Our Gunny will never really go away, he will protect and serve his loved ones, just in a different way, by his numerous examples of love. He genuinely loved his family unconditionally, and read his bible every morning.
