Betty June Belcher Lane, born June 7, 1925 in Alcott, West Virginia, to Delbert Belcher and Faye Edith Stone, passed away peacefully August 31, 2013, Ukiah CA with family at her side.
Betty will be remembered for her love of family and her adventurous spirit. After graduating from St. Albans, W. VA High School, she moved with her mother and stepfather Roy Trump to Corpus Christi, Texas where he participated in the WWII war industry. After studying chemistry at Del Mar Junior College, Betty moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she worked as a genuine Rosy the Riveter, on naval airplanes. There she met her future husband James Henry Lane, Sr. who served as the shift inspector. Betty and Jim married March 17, 1945 and during their 38 years of marriage, Betty was a dedicated Navy wife, moving to numerous duty stations. Betty raised her two children, Patricia, born in Jacksonville, Fla., and Jimmy, born in Kodiak, Alaska, often serving as a single parent for many months while Jim was deployed on aircraft carriers. After his retirement, and employment at United Airlines, they resided in Sunnyvale, California for 30 years where Betty was active in her childrens school programs, and was a creative homemaker. She and Jim travelled widely in North America.
Betty had a 10 year career in the research division of Hewlett Packard in Palo Alto, in the 1950s and 60s. She was chosen for the responsibility of assembling the first HP computer prototype.
After Jims death, Betty devoted herself to nurturing her 5 grandchildren, caring for her aging mother, and travelling. Betty travelled extensively internationally and throughout the US. In her 70s, Betty embarked on a cross country road trip with her beloved dog Felipe by her side. Betty lived in Ukiah in the 1980s, then Sacramento, Albuquerque, and Las Vegas before returning to Ukiah where she lived for the last 10 years at the Autumn Leaves Apartments.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Jim, and son James (Jimmy) Henry Lane, Jr., sister Mary Belcher Rimmer, and brother Harold Ray Jim Belcher. She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Dennis) Thygesen, Ukiah; Daughter in Law Renee Burris Lane (Auburn): five grandchildren: Samantha Iverson Johnson (Jeremiah), Ogden, UT; Erica Lee Thygesen, Portland OR; Brian Carl Thygesen (Mariana), San Francisco; Megan Elizabeth Lane, Cairo, Egypt; Matthew Lane, Auburn; one great-granddaughter, Lillian Elena Thygesen, San Francisco; and numerous nieces, nephew, grand nieces and grand nephews.
