Obituary:
Elpis Hope Leventis was born on March 25, 1926 and passed away on March 27, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Leventis. She is survived by her three daughters, Dessie Velissaratos, Elaine Kratsas, Elizabeth Evangelatos and her son, Zack Leventis, along with 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Hope had lived a long and adventurous life. She was born on the beautiful Greek Island of Kefalonia and survived occupied Greece during World War II. She met her husband, John Leventis, by chance at the end of that war and they soon left to start their lives in Alexandria, Egypt.
All four of their children were born in Egypt, and in 1960, the entire family left Egypt for Ukiah, CA. Her entrepreneurial spirit came to the surface out of necessity and she convinced her husband to purchase a local pizza parlor on South State Street Straws Pizza. The family eventually sold that restaurant and she worked with her son at Zacks Restaurant until 2004. She was known as Mama and famous for her delicious pies.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in her name to the Memorial Fund that has been established by the Mendocino County Deputy Sheriffs Association at the Savings Bank for the Del Fiorentino family. Deputy Ricky Del Fiorentino was shot and killed while on duty earlier this month, leaving a wife, five children and a grandchild behind. Please contact the Savings Bank for more information.
