Joseph Phillip Madron, 95, passed away June 4, 2014, at home in Ukiah, and finally found brothers Tom, Robert, George, Billy, and sister Lillian. He is greatly missed by Mildred, his wife of nearly 74 years.
Joe was born August 31, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Thomas Charles and Ida Louise Linnecke Madron. The fifth of six children, he graduated from South High School, majored in political science at the University of Utah, and played violin in the Salt Lake City Symphony Orchestra.
He and Mildred Lee married in 1940 and settled in Los Angeles where he worked during WWII making experimental wood and plastic airplane parts until being drafted in 1944 and serving in the infantry in France in the Colmar Pocket offensive. The war ended while he was recuperating from injuries and he was assigned to accompany prisoners of war home to Italy.
Returning to his young family, he worked again at Westcraft, making trailers with plywood paneling, the forerunners to RVs. Joe began making cabinets for friends in his garage and soon opened his own business, Engle-Madron Company, fabricating cabinetry for custom homes and apartments. He was always making things of wood, remodeling or building homes, building a new home for his family in 1963. Later, he taught high-school woodshop and worked as building and grounds supervisor at Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
Mildred and Joe moved to Ukiah in 1990, buying a home on South Dora Street, almost immediately adding a master bedroom suite and a garage/shop for his woodworking. His wood-worker’s and violinist’s hands remained strong all his life.
In Los Angeles, Joe was Commander of the Highland Park American Legion Post. He participated in the Methodist Church as a youth. After affiliating with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as Scoutmaster and Counselor in the Bishopric of Highland Park Ward, as Bishop of the South Pasadena Ward where he oversaw construction of a new meetinghouse, and as High Priest Group Leader and Membership Clerk in the Ukiah I Ward. Any assignment he was given, he always did to the best of his ability.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; three daughters, Jo Ann Henrie, husband Patrick (Ukiah); Elizabeth Anderson, husband Lynn, (Los Angeles); and Mary Stanley, husband Jack (Los Angeles); 11 grandchildren, Amanda Grace (Sebastopol); Jeni Henrie (Chico), Jill Millward (Boise, ID), Sara Bogner (Ukiah), Marie Johnson (Williamsburg, VA), Kjerstin Thweatt (Rathdrum, ID), Lisa Anderson (Los Angeles), Heidi Flores (Santa Cruz), Amy Burgoyne, (Scotts Valley), John Stanley (San Gabriel), Tom Stanley (Ontario); and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Inise “Ini” Naicegucegu, Joe’s caregiver for the past year, and Phoenix Hospice for their kind care.
Viewing will be Thursday at 12 p.m. with services at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2390 South Dora Street, Ukiah. Internment following in the Veterans Section of the Russian River Cemetery. Arrangements and care under the direction of The Eversole Mortuary.
