Dr. Sidney W. Maurer Jr.



Dr. Sidney W. Maurer Jr. died Wednesday, May 15 at the age of 80, when he was struck by a falling tree while gardening near his home in Redwood Valley, CA. He was the husband of Ginny; father of Sid M. (Sue), Mary Ellen (Tim), Gretchen (Michael), Matt (Ramona); grandfather of Lindsay, Sid Z., Caitlin, Elliott, Aidan, Maya, Kai, Noa, Diego, Miguel, & Sophia. Sid was born in Minneapolis, MN, to Esther and Sidney W. Maurer, and was raised on a farm in Red Wing Minnesota. His Minnesota farm upbringing shaped his lifelong, hard core, tough-it-out work ethic.



Sid received his B.A., B.S., and M.D. degrees from the University of

Minnesota. He completed his residency in Stockton, CA, and his fellowship in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Sid served as a Peace Corps physician in Turkey. He later worked in Washington D.C. for the Office of Economic Opportunity, directly under Sargent Shriver, to set up neighborhood health clinics nationwide. He was an early champion of the nurse practitioner model that has been adopted throughout the country.



Sid was an effective problem solver and a man of big ideas. After moving to Ukiah, CA, in 1969, he co-founded the Pomo Clinic, the Ukiah Valley Child Development Center, Russian River Pistachios, and the Ukiah Valley Primary Care Medical Group. He devoted over forty-four years to his work as a pediatrician and an emergency room doctor in Mendocino and Lake counties.



Sid loved spending time with his family. Often up at the crack of dawn, he took great pleasure in working with his kids: raising sheep and pigs, splitting wood, and bailing hay. Throughout his 52-year marriage, he and his family enjoyed traveling, backpacking, fishing, canoeing, cross country skiing, and swimming. Sid studied books and maps at night, planning the next family adventure.



Recently retired, Sid had many community-oriented projects that he dreamed of tackling: rails-to-trails from Ukiah to Eureka, an amphitheater, a marble fountain, a mountain luge, refurbishing local tennis courts, cement ping-pong tables in the park, and stopping the extreme erosion of the Russian River stream bed.



He was a remarkable, loving man who will be missed.



The memorial service will be on Thursday, May 23, at 1:00 p.m., at Saint Mary of the Angels Catholic Church in Ukiah, CA.



To honor Dr. Sidney Maurer's contributions to the community, the Maurer family has established a scholarship for Ukiah area children to backpack at Camp Unalayee in the Trinity Alps, and a fund to support and advance nursing.
