Opal Leah Mayfield
Opal Leah Mayfield, born Opal Lee Thompson, April 6th, 1916 in Conway County, Arkansas, died Wednesday, April 20th, 2010 at 1:17 p.m. at home surrounded by her family. She celebrated her 94th birthday two weeks prior on April 6th.
She married John Mayfield June 22nd, 1934 in Nowata, Oklahoma and they moved to Orr Springs Road, starting Mendo Mill and Lumber Company in 1943. They lived at the mill on Orr Springs Road for 9 years before moving closer to town until they built their current home in Ukiah in 1960. She lived in the area for 68 years, raising seven children and pursuing her love of painting, sewing and quilting.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband John M. Mayfield in 1996.
She is survived by 3 of her 4 siblings, Ruby Scarie (deceased), Juanita Gaut, Marion Thompson and Martha Barra; 6 of her 7 children, Leah Ford and husband Harry, Johnny Mayfield and wife Sandy, Marcia Root and husband Ron, Joe Mayfield and wife Diane, Joan Gaustad (deceased) husband Eric, Dorthy Vogel and husband Alan and Linda Grantland; 15 grandchildren, Jill Gregor and husband Ray, Alice Howry and husband Terry, Suzi Negley and husband Jeff, Jim Mayfield and wife Babie, Ted Mayfield, Susan Hewitt and husband Matt, Jennie Guzman and husband Rick, Julie Bartlow and husband Bruce, Mike Mayfield and wife Barbara, Dede Mayfield Bedford, Kelly Vogel Tellstrom, Tracy Thieriot and husband Ferdinand, Michael Finley and wife Lori, Matt Finley, Meghan Martinez and husband Caspar; 31 great grandchildren, John Ross Gregor, Terry and Nicolas Howry, James and Jillian Mayfield, Ryan and Jenna Mayfield, Jack, Ava and Julia Hewitt, Loren and Ryan Guzman, Emily and Austin Bartlow, Kyle and Kate Mayfield, Harris and Owen Bedford, Kyle, Lucas and Kera Tellstrom, Ferdinand Thieriot IV and a mystery, Michael, Chantelle, Manuel, Amanda and Alecia Finley, Logan and Kaylin Finley, Eric and Abigail Martinez.
Services will be held at Eversole Mortuary on Monday, April 26th, 2010 at 2 p.m. Graveside services will follow at the Russian River Cemetery on 940 Low Gap Road in Ukiah.
