Janice Nadine McDermott
Janice Nadine McDermott, 73, of Ukiah, passed away in the first few minutes of October 7th, 2010 after her long battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
She was born to the late Eugene and Muriel King, January 21, 1937 in San Jose. Janice graduated from Lincoln High School, and received her BA in Psychology from San Jose State University. In 1957 she married Donald McDermott, and they lived together in San Jose before relocating to Ukiah in 1975. They just recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Janice was passionate about children and learning, and began substitute teaching in 1976. She headed her own preschool class at Yokayo Elementary School for 21 years, becoming Director of the program in 1993, and teaching more than 400 students before retiring in 2008. Mrs. Mac was always fondly recognized by both kids and parents everywhere she went in town.
Janice is survived by her husband Don McDermott, son and wife John and Diane McDermott of San Jose, daughter and husband Danelle McDermott and Chris Legrand of San Francisco, and sister and husband Claudia and Don Braden of Tennessee. She is also survived by her two grandsons Bradford and Jarrod McDermott, and many extended family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Hospice of Ukiah, and childrens organizations.
A gathering to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, October 16th from 1-4pm at the SDA Community Service Center at 151 Cherry Street, Ukiah.
