Jose Mendoza-Lua - age: 68
(January 20, 1945 to August 20, 2013 )
Resident of Ukiah, California

Obituary:
Jose Mendoza-Lua was born on January 2, 1945 in Paredones, Michoacán to Francisco Mendoza Nuñez and Catalina Lua Lua. He passed away on August 20, 2013 in Ukiah at the age of 68. Jose was the second of eleven children. He was pre-deceased by both his parents, and by four of his siblings: Raul, Francisco, David and Miguel. In addition to his devoted wife of 48 years, Ana Maria Manzo Mendoza, “Mi guerra de oro,” he is survived by his remaining siblings: Martha, Maria, Bertha, Jesus, Margarita and Catalina and by his eight loving children, Araceli (Steven) Grow, Ana (Jesse) Halstad, Jesus, Jose, Leticia (Efrain) Chavez, Francisco (Melissa) Mendoza, Ramon (Sonia) Mendoza and Gloria (Jesus) Vega. He also leaves his adoring grandchildren, Gabriel, Jacob, Isaac, Edgar, Vanessa, Joel, Monica, Joseph, Yadira, Andrea, Cesar, Yazmin and Jesus, Jr., and great-grandchildren Julian and Jocelyn.
Jose first came to Ukiah in 1963 as a contracted laborer through the Bracero Program. He and his wife Ana and their young family then settled here in 1975 as he began working on a number of local vineyards and ranches, including as a long-time, trusted foreman for Mark Turula.
Known for his sense of humor and love of companionship, Jose was happiest when surrounded by his large, but close-knit family. He was also known and will be remembered by many for his generosity. He and his wife opened their home to many people in their time of need; he never turned his back to any stranger in need.
Everlasting memories of Jose are his morning walks at Lake Mendocino and his afternoon Frappuccino’s from Starbuck’s. His favorite sayings were “Ahorita te vas” and “Asi me gusta que vengan, bañaditos y comiditos”.
Jose will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered. He fought a courageous battle to overcome Leukemia. His family wishes to thank all those who believed in his strength and courage throughout the past two years, in particular his two best friends who stood by him until the end; Benito and Rafael. A public rosary will be held at St. Mary of the Angels Church from 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 22nd to 7:00 a.m. Friday, August 23rd. Father Alvin will celebrate a Holy Mass at noon on Friday the 23rd at St. Mary’s, with interment immediately afterward at Russian River Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Eversole Mortuary.
