Obituary:
Glenn Wilfred Miller
It is with great sorrow we announce that Glenn Wilfred Miller MD passed away. He died peacefully at his home in Ukiah, California on December 30, 2014. Glenn was born to Howard and Isabelle Miller in Loma Linda, California on April 25, 1921.
He attended Walla Walla College in Washington State, studying pre-med. Following college he studied medicine at Loma Linda University. While in medical school Glenn met and fell in love with Aldene Anderson, from Greeley, Colorado. She had moved to Los Angeles to study nursing. He liked to say that their romance was the story of a medical student falling in love with a nurse. On December 23, 2014 Glenn and Aldene celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Soon after completion of medical school and shortly after his wedding Glenn was called to serve two years in the Army Air Corps as a medical officer.
Few of us were here in 1947 to remember when Dr. Miller began his career in Ukiah as a family medicine physician. After 10 years of general practice, he took further specialized training and came back to Ukiah to practice as an Anesthesiologist. Dr. Miller semi-retired in 1986, but continued to serve as the Director of Health Promotions at the Ukiah Valley Medical Center, supporting each individuals pursuit of a better lifestyle.
Most recently Dr. Miller has been serving as a volunteer at the Ukiah Valley Medical Center.
In 1998, the Ukiah Valley Medical Center lovingly named and dedicated their conference room as the Glenn Miller Conference and Education Center, as a tribute to his 50 years of practicing medicine in the Ukiah area.
In 2001 he was named citizen of the year by the Mendocino County Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of his many facets of community service. These included volunteering at schools and local business, emphasizing the importance of health and education to Ukiah youth, and being a doctor on the sidelines at local football games.
Glenn was a loving husband and father, a tremendous role model to his children. He was an active member of the Ukiah Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was generous and fun. He loved tennis and could soundly beat opponents much younger than he. He loved spending time with his family, he enjoyed gardening, and was well known for his show quality camellias. He loved music, travel and was an avid San Francisco Giants and Forty-Niner fan.
Glenn Miller made the health and happiness of this community his lifes work. A path of loving service that we would all do well to follow.
Those who mourn his death are his beloved wife Aldene Miller, his sons Steve Miller of Ukiah, Fred Miller of Angwin, his daughter Marilyn (Muffie) Etchell, and son-in-law Philip Etchell of Healdsburg. His brother Dr. Arthur Miller of Days Creek, Oregon, brother- in- law Bill Anderson of La Salle, Colorado, and numerous nieces and nephews.
For those who wish to make a charitable donation in Glenns honor, please send contributions to the Ukiah Junior Academy Worthy Student Fund. UJA 180 Stipp Lane, Ukiah, CA 95482
