Obituary:
Landis Morgan Longtime resident of Ukiah, Landis Morgan passed away on Thursday, February 9th 2012 in Santa Rosa, CA due to complications of an 8 year battle of dementia. Born in Calpella in 1925 to Walter Howard Landis Morgan, Sr and Mary Alice Thompson, was 1 of seven children. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the US Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II as a diesel mechanic onseveral Naval destroyer ships. Unfortunately, he was on two ships that were sunk by the Japanese fleet. On one occasion, he swam the shark infested waters of the Pacific for three days until he and his fewremaining crew members were rescued by the US Navy. Landis graduated from Ukiah High School and attended Santa Rosa Jr. College. He married Beverly Lois Bell Morgan who past away in 1988. Landis was a major employer in Mendocino County for over 3 decades operating 3 saw mills, logging operations and at one point over 150 lumber, logging and chip trucks based in Ukiah. Philo Lumber Co, West Range Corp and Landis Morgan Transportation were a few of the companies he owned. His passion was the outdoors whether it was in the forests of Mendocino County or sport hunting with his family and friends. Landis is survived by his two children, Cynthia Morgan Stone of Roseburg, Oregon and Timothy W Morgan of Beaverton, Oregon. Four grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Burial will be 10:00AM Thursday, February 16th at Russian River Cemetery in Ukiah.
