Obituary:
Betty Lee Pietila
Born December 25, 1927 in Westport, Oregon. Passed away October 12, 2013 in Ukiah, CA.
Betty was raised by parents Thomas and Lecile Rinker in Kalama, Washington. Graduating from Kalama High in 1946. Betty married Niilo Pietila in 1946 and moved with him in 1948 to Northern California, Eureka and then Piercy as a logger’s wife and homemaker. She learned to drive in Piercy by getting in the Studebaker and driving the treacherous roads there until she felt confident enough to drive to Ukiah and take the test on her own. They then moved to Redwood Valley for 48 years until Niilo passed. She spent the next few years at Autumn Leaves.
Besides homemaking and raising her “kids” she had also worked in the woods behind her husband on the caterpillar “setting chokers”. Later she worked for in-home care with many of her clients becoming lifelong friends. Everyone’s kids were hers and called her gramma. Betty had a knack for collecting and loved garage or any other kind of sale.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and 12 aunts and uncles, husband Niilo, sister Gina Hendrix of Portland, Oregon and her husband James, daughter Elizabeth Nieze-Pietila, brother in law Ron Ray of Portland, Oregon and son Michael’s special friend Sandy.
She is survived by sister Estella Ray of Portland, Oregon, sons John (Clinta) of Santa Rosa, Eugene (Kathleen) of Ukiah, Michael of Redwood Valley, Chester (Georgia) of Ukiah. Grandchildren Melanie and Melissa Nieze of San Diego, Kristen Spina of Oakland, Matti of Salinas, Lori (Ron) Powers of Ukiah. Great grandchildren Samantha Spina of Oakland, Mark Spina of Oakland, Shelby (Tim) Baker of Ukiah, Alexis Powers of Ukiah and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins mostly in Oregon.
The family would like to thank Dr. Guy Teran and the staff of Redwood Cove for their special care for Gramma.
Visitation will be held at Eversole Mortuary on Friday, October 18, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Burial will be at the Kalama I.O.O.F. Cemetery at a later date with her husband and next to her parents.
