Obituary:
Bernal Laverne Beckman Persky was born November 1, 1925 in San Francisco. She passed away at her home in Ukiah, surrounded by family and her devoted dog Chance on July 28, 2014. Laverne was the beloved mother of Joan, Kathy, Preston, Wanda, and Jim. She had eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Raised in San Francisco, she was a truly adventurous California girl. Having marched across the Golden Gate Bridge on opening day, she repeated that walk on the Bridge's 50th and 75th anniversaries. Mother began her professional life at the age of 17, when she took a 320 hour "war training course" given by U.C. titled "Engineering Drawing and Computation." After working as a cartographer for many years, she expanded her expertise doing field work. In 1964, Laverne became the second woman ever licensed by the State of California as a Land Surveyor. She was a surveyor for many years, including ten years with Mendocino County Public Works. She maintained her license until June 2010. The Persky Family cherishes their memories of this remarkable lady
