Mary Elizabeth Purdy-Humphrey - age: 90
(October 31, 1922 to June 18, 2013 )
Resident of Fort Bragg, California

Obituary:
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Purdy Humphrey completed her long and beautiful life on Tuesday June 18, 2013 at her home in Fort Bragg, surrounded by family and friends. Betty was born on October 31, 1922 in Ukiah to Elmer C and Effie May J Purdy. She was the granddaughter of botanist Carl Purdy of Ukiah, CA. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Gene, her daughter Julie and granddaughter Linda, sisters Vesta and Frances. She is survived by her partner Bill Keller, sister Claire Shoens (Chuck), daughters Mary and Patricia (Marty); Grandchildren Kevin, Rhonda (Steve), Scott (Krissy), Andrea (Clarence), Eric, Byron (Etsuko) and Shanann (Kris). She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a Charter member of Soroptomists International, member of Eastern Star and Native Daughters of the Golden West and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Bragg. She also cooked "Betty's Beans" monthly for the homeless. Betty had a beautiful singing voice. She sang and played piano with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty loved to read, travel, garden, and had a passion for cooking and canning her own foods. She was a beloved matriarch who was both warm and kind and had a backbone of steel. Betty grew up in the depression era and could make a leather boot taste like filet mignon. Betty was known to "pinch a nickel until it screamed," but she was also incredibly generous and thoughtful. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She remained active and healthy until diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease) 7 months ago. Her goal was to live until she was 100 years old. She only missed her goal by 9 years and 4 months. Betty's family and loved ones will never forget her warm smile, wry humor and twinkling blue eyes. We will miss her.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Fort Bragg First Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m.
