Obituary:
ROSLYN ROSEN

A force of nature was stilled on April 21, 2013, when Roslyn Rosen, nee Greenberg, died peacefully at her home in Ukiah, California following a brief illness.
Roz was born February 12, 1928. She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Brooklyn College. She was an impassioned advocate for the developmentally disabled, whether in local schools or at the State Capitol in Albany, and was proud to have served as the President of the New York State Teachers of the Handicapped. She was one of the first teachers to be trained to diagnose and treat learning disabilities, and taught Master’s level special education classes at Brooklyn College in addition to her ongoing work as a New York City school teacher. An ardent feminist, Roz continually encouraged the women around her to pursue educational and professional goals.
Upon retirement, she was a hard-working volunteer with many Brooklyn organizations, including Friends of Marine Park/Gerritsen Creek, the New York City chapter of the American Littoral Society, the New York Aquarium and the Sebago Canoe Club. Following her move across country to Ukiah, she enjoyed volunteering at a local pre-school program and with the Friends of the Library book sales while her health permitted, was active in the local chapter of the American Association of University Women, attended the Lunch Bunch at the Senior Center, and enjoyed attending local concerts and theater events.
Roz was 16 years old when she met a tall, dark handsome man from Montreal, and a few years later married the love of her life, Jack Rosen, who died in 2000. She is survived by her daughters, Janet Rosen of Ukiah CA (Stuart Kremsky) and Judi Frinstein of Georgetown TX (Howie Frinstein), a smattering of relatives around the United States and Canada and untold numbers of friends, because Roz could walk into a roomful of strangers and emerge an hour later with a whole new circle of dear friends.
At her request, there will be no services. Donations in her name may be made to Plowshares or to the Ukiah Senior Center.
Eversole Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
