Obituary:
Walter Herman Salmen, 74, of Redwood Valley, died peacefully Tuesday, December 17th after battling brain cancer.
He was born April 22, 1939 in Los Angeles California to the late Herman and Marie Salmen.
Walters family moved to the Redwood Valley in 1950, and at age 11 he attended Redwood Valley Grammar School and then Ukiah High School. He earned a BS in Forestry from Humboldt State University.
Upon graduation he joined the Peace Corps in 1961. He was stationed in Turkey where he worked for the Peace Corps and CARE for six years. CARE transferred him to India to help with the famine of 1967.
In 1969 he married his wife Neelam, in India. He was transferred in 1970 to Nigeria to help with rebuilding after the civil war. They returned to Redwood Valley in 1971 for the birth of his first son Stephen. He joined his father in construction. For forty years, Walter was a craftsman, a profession he loved, building many homes in the valley, He was also a lover of the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and flying.
Walter is surived by his wife of 44 years Neelam, his son Stephen and wife Julie, his granddaughter Mabel, his son Neal, sister Helena, nephew Mark, niece Gretchen, his beloved lab Siyah, and numerous close friends who have given their help, love, and support.
Services will be held at Eversole Mortuary at 11AM, Monday the 23rd. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Hospice of Ukiah, Redwood Valley Fire Department, or a charity of ones choosing.
