Obituary:
Potter Valley Loses a Rancher
Longtime Potter Valley resident, James Theodore Schurr, a descendent of early Potter Valley settlers, the William Eddie and John Spencer Families, who arrived in Potter Valley in the 1800's, was called to our Lord on April 19, surrounded by loving family. James was the son of the late Alma Marie Eddie and Theodore H. Schurr. A farmer of the old school and man of few words, he followed beef, lamb and grain prices daily from his Wall Street Journal; was commonly seen on his tractor cutting and bailing hay and feeding his sheep and cattle.
James was an avid sports fan, he loved to follow current politics and was an avid reader of books mostly of biographies and world history. After learning the meat processing business in Sacramento, James ran the butcher shop at the local Potter Valley store. James and Dorothy founded Schurr's Custom Meats in Potter Valley, which they later sold to Warden's Meats. Schurr's Custom Meats sold meat to some restaurants in the bay area, to the local jail house, and served the Counties of Mendocino and Lake, butchering, cutting and wrapping for the community and the local fairs. James was most famous for his specialty pork sausage. He was also a trained marksman, soldier and part of an anti-aircraft division in the Army as well as a veteran of the Korean War.
Born in Ukiah on September 27, 1925, he graduated from Grant Union High School in Sacramento. James was an outstanding athlete that garnered him two scholarships --St. Mary's College and USC; he graduated from Grant Technical College. He was an all-city offensive fullback and defensive linebacker for the Grant Pacers; he was also a starting forward for the high school basketball team.
James loved his family and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy J. Schurr; his four children, James Schurr of BC, Canada, Sandra White (Richard) of St. Louis, MO; Christopher Burris (Nancy) of Potter Valley, and Diane Mosna (John) of Ukiah. He will also be missed by his sisters, Lorraine Mathews of Potter Valley and Dorothy Rhoads of Sacramento, as well as his nine grandchildren; Christine Lopez, Jason White, Casey Burris (Kathy), Brian Burris (Lauren), Josh Mosna (Lucinda), Bethany Bojkousky (Paul), Katie Kater (Ben), Fred Schurr, Amos Schurr; eleven great grandchildren, and one Great Great Grandchild; his nephews and nieces, Todd W. Rhoads, Ann Marie Brooks, Mike Christofferson; Dale Scott and Tim Scott.
There will be a service at Eversole Mortuary at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, the 27th of April and a gathering for lunch will immediately follow in Potter Valley, address to be provided at the service.
Donations are favored in lieu of flowers for James' favorite charity, the Potter Valley Volunteer Fire Department.
