James Hansen Smith
James Hansen Smith passed away of natural causes on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Ukiah Valley Medical Center with his family by his side.
Jim was born May 2, 1926 in Ukiah, the son of Porter Lincoln Smith Sr. and Mildred Hansen. He met his future wife Marilyn when he was in the sixth grade, they married on February 1, 1948 at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church. Jim graduated from Ukiah High School, Class of 1945. Jim served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII serving in Germany. When he returned from Germany he helped finish the first basalt block building in Ukiah, Cox Motors. Jim continued to work at Cox Motors on the corner of Smith and Oak streets with his uncle William G. and aunt Genevieve Cox. Upon the death of his Uncle Bunt, Jim was appointed by the Chrysler Corporation as the dealer of Cox Motors. He worked on that corner for 37 years.
After retirement Jim and Marilyn traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. They belonged to a couples golf group and traveled with them to many places in the continental US, five times to Hawaii and once to Jamaica. For their 50th wedding anniversary they went to Europe for a month. Jim was a member of Ukiah Rotary, Paul Harris Fellow and the Ukiah Elks.
Jim is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marilyn Smith of Ukiah, half brother David Sonny Smith, brother-in-law Kevin Coles, his daughter Shannon, son John Smith, wife Patty of Houston, Texas, daughter Charlotte Visser of Ukiah, son Paul Smith, wife Mary of Ukiah, grandchildren Peter Smith, wife Allison, Corinne Schneider, husband Khal, Tyler and Barret Formslag, Kenneth, Jordan and Daniel Smith, great grandchildren Carson, Darren and Greta, niece Sharon Smith and nephew James Russell Smith. He was preceded in death by his brother Porter Lincoln Smith Jr. and sister Christine Sierens Bertsch.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 27, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Eversole Mortuary with Mr. Kevin Mack officiating. Interment will follow at Ukiah Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions to St. Marys School, Grace Hudson Museum or ones favorite charity are preferred by the family.
