Obituary:
Laurene Eline Sparks born March 6th, 1921 in Pierre, South Dakota passed on after a brief illness, surrounded by her family at home on the morning of August 8th, 2011. Daughter of Theodore S. Hansen and Laura M Nelson, Laurene lived a full and happy life. She moved to Ukiah with her daughter Christy in 1974 after falling in love with the area while on a trip to the area as a possible transfer while working with the Social Security Department. It was Todd Grove Park that sealed the deal. Laurene loved the outdoors, as proven by her membership and past presidency of The Garden Club, and Ukiah Saturday afternoon club. She was also a past worthy matron of Eastern Star, Laurene also volunteered her time teaching literacy to adults, and making quilts for adolescent cancer patients confined to the hospital, among other good deeds.
In 1926 Laurene, along with her brother and parents drove to California from South Dakota, where Laurene worked with her father at the Bank of America before working with the Social Security Department.
Laurene was a beautiful, wonderful, strong and unique individual, caring for her parents, her family, and anyone lucky enough to know her. Her mother passed away in 1968, and her father followed in 1978. She was preceded in death by her brother Stanley, and oldest niece Laura Hilton.
Laurenes one and only true love was Benjamin Franklin Sparks whom she met while enrolled in his dance class. They were married in April of 1957, and in October of 1959, Laurene gave birth to their daughter Christy. Ben passed away prematurely in February of 1961 due to an aneurism, and Laurene made it her lifes work to care for their daughter.
Laurene leaves behind her daughter and son in law, Christy and Jeff Harpe, 3 grandchildren, Carrie, Melanie, and Jeffrey, whom she says were the light of her life, and one great grandchild, Ryan Harpe, whom shared a special place in her heart.
