Obituary:
Walter “Shine” Lewis Tuttle, born on May 1, 1915 in Lucas County, Iowa, died peacefully at home on February 10, 2012 at the age of 96. Shine was preceded in death by his beloved wife Beth, infant daughter Vivian and grandson Nathan Vaughn. Shine was the last surviving child of eight children born to Walter and Mattie Tuttle.
Shine is survived by his loving daughters Linda Stewart (Chuck), Doris Vaughn (Ron), and Betty Hiatt; grandchildren Nancy Bellen (Tim), Brian Witherell, Toby Vaughn (Diana), Rachel Henderson (Todd), Laura Hiatt, Natalie McMilin (Eric); step-grand children K.C. Stewart (Mysty) and Kelly Weaver(Brian); great- grand children Wiley Bellen, Colton Henderson, Bryce Henderson, Chase Henderson, Andrew Vaughn, Madison Vaughn, Daphne Witherell, Bennett Witherell, Chelsea Hiatt and Aden McMilin; and step-great-grand children Nichole Weaver, Derek Weaver, Samantha Stewart and Kyle Stewart. Shine is also survived by two sisters-in-law Averyel Willis and Millie Tuttle and numerous loved nieces and nephews. Above all things in his life, Shine loved his family.
Shine graduated from high school in Millerton, Iowa in 1934, one of a class of three. He came to California in November, 1937 and met the love of his life, Beth, on New Year’s Eve, 1938. Shine and Beth were married for 67 years, residing all but a few of those years in Boonville.
Shine served in the Army in World War II and was a founding member of the Anderson Valley American Legion Post 385. He was a general contractor in Anderson Valley until his retirement. He was also a volunteer fireman and a member of the Anderson Valley Lions Club. He was instrumental in establishing the Anderson Valley Senior Center and the Anderson Valley Historical Society and was a long-time member of the Boonville Methodist Church.
In retirement Shine and Beth enjoyed twenty years of traveling, square dancing, round dancing and their many volunteer activities. Shine served on the Mendocino County Grand Jury and was always involved in issues affecting the Anderson Valley community.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Shine’s caregivers Laurie Schon, Bill DeFrenne and Paula Knedler-Kisling. The family is also grateful to Shine’s doctor Mark Apfel, MD and to Judy Nelson, RN and the staff of the Anderson Valley Hospice.
Services will be held on Thursday, February 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the Boonville Methodist Church with Pastor Diane Knox officiating. A graveside service with military honors will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery and a gathering of family and friends will follow immediately at the Anderson Valley Senior Center.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Shine’s memory to the Anderson Valley Senior Center, the Anderson Valley Historical Society or the Anderson Valley Health Center.
