Obituary:
Fairy Lucille Van Housen, a long-time resident of Ukiah, passed away Wednesday the 28th of April at the age of 86 from natural causes.
In 1924 Fairy, the oldest of five children born to parents Lillian Hazel Tucker and Wallace (Bum) Ewing Wilson, made her way into the world. She was so named because as an infant her mother stated she had tiny fairy-like features. During the depression years, work was scarce and Fairys father needed to move his family often as he tried to find employment as a pipe fitter and equipment operator. Although born in Kaskaskia, Illinois, Fairys young years were spent moving from Missouri, Colorado, California and Michigan until finally settling in Oregon. It was there that she met her future husband, Charles Neal Van Housen. They were married in 1941.
In 1942, during the height of World War II, Neal enlisted in the army and saw action as a Buck Sergeant and field medic in Italy, France and North Africa. On the home front, Fairy and her sisters did their part to support the war efforts while working at the ammunition depot in Hermiston, Oregon. Fairy was even featured on the cover of a flyer promoting Rosie the riveter.
Fairy and Neal welcomed the birth of their first son James (Jim) in 1946. One year later they moved to Ukiah and by 1949 their family grew with the arrival of their second son Marc. Fairy was a homemaker who had a passion for oil painting and building three dimensional art scenes. In 1977 the Ukiah Daily Journal featured a nice article on her art scenes which she was very proud of.
She is survived by her sons, Jim Van Housen and wife Janet of Redwood Valley, Marc Van House and his wife Jeanie of Napa, grandchildren Lory McAsey and husband Dan of Potter Valley, Clay Van Housen of Kelseyville, Chrissy Van Housen, Dustin Van Housen of Napa, Brady Van Housen of Napa, great grandchildren Jimmy McAsey, Melinda McAsey, Tyler Van Housen and Ryan Van Housen, great great granddaughters Cassidy, Laila and Tatiana. She also left behind numerous nieces and nephews she loved dearly.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Neal Van Housen, her father Wallace Wilson, mother Lillian Beal, half sisters Ruby Adams and Hazel Zimmerman, siblings Oretta Richardson, Viola Miller, Donna Kelm and Jim Wilson.
