Obituary:
At her request no services will be held for Evelyn Cliburn Whitley of Redwood Valley who passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 with her family by her side. Born May 2, 1925 in Santa Clara, she has lived in the
Redwood Valley area for 90 years. She graduated high school and worked in retail as a young woman, then managed the Redwood Valley Store for 40 years until her retirement. She served as P.T.A. President for 10 years, P.T.A. State Representative and was a member of the Eastern Star Ukiah Branch. She received the P.T.A. State Achievement Award in 1964. She will be remembered for her hard work, integrity and her commitment to family. She was proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Favorite quote: “Too much teasing leads to tears.”
Evelyn was from an immigrant family from Lucca, Italy. Her grandfather Giuseppe Cantaronni was brought from Italy as a dynamite expert for the Union Pacific Railroad. With his earnings he purchased 600 acres between Road I and Skull Mountain in Redwood Valley. Here he planted some of the first Alacati vines in Mendocino County. A large part of this ranch remains in the family and suffered with its neighbors in the recent wildfires.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Carolyn Cliburn Johnson and husband Norm, son Michael A. Cliburn and wife Susan, daughter-in-laws Christine Cliburn and Virginia Testa Cliburn Bartleson, grandchildren Cameron Johnson, Beau Johnson, Morgan Cliburn, Christopher Cliburn, 12 great grandchildren and nephews Rick and Rob Garzini. She was preceded in death by her parents Geno and Elanora Giannotti, husband Charles Cliburn, 2nd husband George Whitley, son Charles Cliburn Jr., sister Anita Garzini and best friends Terri Graziano, Claire Strawhand and Irene Locatelli. The family wants to thank her caretakers; Gretel Townsend, Michelle Rhodes and Carol Fergerson.
Memorial contributions to the Humane Society of Inland Mendocino County or organization of your choice are preferred.
