Obituary:
Earnest Lee Wise, son of Gwen and Marie (Sparks) Wise was born August 15, 1925 in Blue Earth, Minnesota. He attended elementary school in Elmore, Minn. And high school in Ukiah, CA. He was drafted into the US Army on January 6, 1944, serving with the Transportation Corps of the Railroad Division. He was stationed in England, France and Germany as a member of the 723rd Railway Operating Battalion following close to the 9th Army. His job was hauling supplies to the front lines. On April 17, 1946 he was Honorably Discharged from the Army.
On June 8, 1947, he married Evelyn Baade, his childhood friend, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Rolfe, Iowa. To this union, four children were born. Earnest and Evelyn were blessed with 62 years of marriage.
He worked for Masonite in Ukiah for 35 years as a Presswood Press operator and oiler. He was known for being a handyman, capable of remodeling his homes, repairing his cars and doing landscaping.
Earnest was a kind, gentle, friendly man everyone was his friend. His greatest love was for his family. They were his life and he was happiest when he was surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed reading the Bible always having the Bible by his chair reading it by the hour throughout the day. He loved the outdoors, the wildlife and the ocean.
He was a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church of Titonka, Iowa. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ukiah for 40 years, where he served as a deacon and trustee.
Surviving him are his wife, Evelyn, his daughter Dianna Hamrick and husband Lee of Reno, NV, son Duane Wise and wife Shirley of Madison, IN, daughter Julie Orsi and husband Jim of Ukiah, CA. Also surviving is a sister Eula Barber of Ukiah, CA, brother Ron Wise and wife Pat of Sequim, WA. Earnest had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Nancy Lynn Wise, grandson Joshua Heston and his parents Gwen and Marie Wise.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday October 7, 2009 at the Eversole Mortuary from 11 am 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Thursday October 8, 2009 beginning at 1:30 pm. Interment will follow at the Ukiah Cemetery with the Veterans Honor Guard performing military honors.
