Obituary:
Irene Bernice Young
Born July 18, 1919 in Diagonal, Iowa, passed away on March 23, 2012 in Ukiah, she was the youngest child of Jesse and Ellen Brooks. When she was 12 yrs old her father died and the family moved to Santa Rosa, Calif. to be near an Aunt and Uncle, who helped her mother and oldest sister get settled with the younger children and get jobs.
Irene graduated from Santa Rosa High School and attended Santa Rosa Jr. College. Upon the start of WWII she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps and was a Captain by the end of the war.
In 1946 she returned to Santa Rosa and obtained a secretarial position. A few months later she met Gale Young at a Grange dance, and they were married in October 1947. They lived in Santa Rosa for several years, then lived in Hopland for several years, and finally moved to Ukiah in 1960.
At the time of her retirement she was the Manager’s Secretary at the P.G.& E. office, where she had worked for many years.
After her retirement she and Gale traveled all over the USA and to many foreign countries. They belonged to several RV clubs, and traveled with one of their several doxies.
Upon Gale’s death in 2002 (they had been married 54 yrs) she sold the RV and stayed closer to home, but was busy with many activities around town, and very involved with the Senior Center and her church. In 2009 her health began to fail and she needed more assistance, but was still alert and enjoyed visits from friends and family. In January 2012 she went to Holy Spirit Home and enjoyed the loving care she received.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, three sisters and one brother, and several nieces and nephews. She and Gale never had any children but were “special” Aunt and Uncle to many nieces and nephews. She is survived by four nephews and two nieces, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
She always had a smile and encouraging word for everyone and was loved by all. She will be greatly missed, but is now with the rest of her family.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living Ukiah.
